I hate to break the bad news to y’all, but the American legal system does not work in our favor……at least not for the majority us…….

First of all, if the case you need representation for is not easy to win….you can forget about finding a lawyer who will agree to get paid on contingency.

And nowadays, because lying and the skewing of facts are so prevalent in our society (and what attorneys are trained to do), laws have become so technical and complicated that 1) You cannot defend your own case, an attorney must be retained and 2) because of the technical detail, trying to prove anything becomes very difficult…..because some technicality is probably attached to the proof that makes almost all proof inadmissible as evidence.

And, if you happen to be going up against another person who happens to have money to buy a good attorney to defend themselves….you might as well save yourself the time and energy and chuck the whole thing up as “shit happens”

You may say to me that there are many free legal centers and pro bono lawyers……

I Don’t Believe in “Sins”, But Wasting Food is a Sin

I try very hard not to judge others…..but when it comes to waste, I can’t help having somewhat of a negative opinion about those that are so flagrantly wasteful.

When I see Reality Shows like the one I saw recently…..I think it was called Chef Roble & Co. (Bravo)…I have to wonder what people are thinking….

Here’s a clip found from a website called : Doggie Wedding @ Obsessive Chihuahua Disorder

This is what was on the doggie’s menu at their wedding:

  • Appetizer:  Hudson Valley Duck Meatballs (Duck Breast, Carrots)
  • Entree:  Prime Steak Flank and Eggs (Grass Fed Beef, Watercress)
  • Dessert:  Peanute Butter Wedding Cake and Ice Cream

Total cost for 30 people and 15 dogs: $25,000

This is just the epitome of waste.  Whenever I watch my favorite, the Housewives, and others like the Kardashians, I can’t help but wonder what pleasure these people get from spending millions and millions of dollars on things that last for only one night (Kim Kardashian’s mega ridiculous wedding for example).

And…..when they travel to different parts of the world….how do they feel when they see unbelievable poverty…poverty that could be significantly helped for the price of ONE of their cars.

Mitt Romney and the Poor

I have not been paying attention to any of the GOP nomination stuff that has basically taken over the news, but I wanted to talk about one thing that I thought would be interesting that I happened to hear the other day while my husband was watching.

Apparently, Mr. Romney made the following comment that received a lot of negative backlash….‘I’m not so concerned about the poor, they have a safety net. If it has holes, I’ll repair it.’

I believe that the reason that this remark is considered a political gaffe is because by dismissing the poor by saying there are safety nets in place that must mean that he ultimately has no real intention on focusing on the problem with intent to find a solution.  This statement makes it sound as though he is really saying ;;;;”we don’t gotta worry about poor people because I can just make sure they keep getting their freebies and be done with it.”

Maybe that is really what he was saying, but short of this solution, can anyone think of a better one?  Does anyone really think that there is some hope for the “middle class” in this nation – let alone the poor?

Maybe Newt Gingrich’s solution of offering janitorial jobs to children is a reasonable workable solution…..

Employer and Employee vs. Master and Slave – When Is The Line Crossed?

I was watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta last night and there is some controversy over Kim Zolciak’s relationship with her “personal assistant” Sweetie.  Kim is white and Sweetie is black so it makes the whole story a little more controversial.

Kim tends to holler for Sweetie every time she needs something.  If Kim is getting sick of doing anything or needs anything thing done, you will hear her yell “Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” from under her covers in her bedroom until Sweetie comes to her majesty’s assistance.

Now according to Sweetie, Kim is paying her to do be her “personal assistant”.  According to the other housewives, they are embarrassed by the relationship between Kim and Sweetie, because as black women they are not comfortable with the way Sweetie is being treated.

Here is a clip of a fight that ensued over the controversy:

Kim and Nene Fight on Tour Bus

This topic is something I have very strong opinions about and not everyone agrees with my opinions.

I feel that the line is crossed the minute that the employer is intentionally disrespectful to their employee.   The reason I feel this way is because everyone knows, especially our bosses, that employees need their job…and to feel comfortable enough to intentionally disrespect someone you pay money to sends a message (in my opinion) saying …. “I pay you to take my shit and if you want to keep your job, shut up and deal with it”.

Defending Humanity…or Just Being Defensive?

When I read my posts over just to remind myself of the things I have spoken about – I am also paying attention to where I may have contradicted myself.

When talking about spirituality vs reality (the physical world that we live in), it becomes hard to express everything that I think about in one post.  I invariably fail to express everything that I feel about the topic…..because I would not be able to stop typing.  And…when I write another post, I still may miss some crucial points that may tie things together.

That is the reason I encourage everyone who is reading my blog to please ask questions.  I may not explain something as fully and as coherent as I would have liked and I will never know unless I get feedback telling me so.

Back to the subject….

I have found one pretty major inconsistency within my blog.  The topic of sticking up for one’s self.

You might say the right to stick up for one’s self is obvious.  It is not so obvious to me according to the way that I think about things.  In fact, intention is always the root of behavior so, in this case intention also matters.

Don’t get me wrong – it is never wrong to stick up for one’s self, but there are many different reasons why one would need to and many different ways to do it – and these variables make the difference to me in how I decide the appropriate time to stick up for myself.

Being defensive is not necessarily a good thing.  Yes, we all get defensive once in a while…but what is it that we are defending.  Are we defending something that maybe we are wrong about and we just don’t want to see the truth – or are we defending our right (and everyone else’s right) to dignity.

That is the question I ask myself (or try to ask myself) if I feel myself becoming defensive.

Here is the difference;

Like A Rolling Stone

One of my favorite songs…..

Here are the lyrics:

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you ?
People’d call, say, “Beware doll, you’re bound to fall”
You thought they were all kiddin’ you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin’ out
Now you don’t talk so loud
Now you don’t seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?

You’ve gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you’re gonna have to get used to it
You said you’d never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but know you realize
He’s not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain’t no good
You shouldn’t let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain’t it hard when you discover that
He really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They’re drinkin’, thinkin’ that they got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts
But you’d better take your diamond ring, you’d better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You’re invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?

I think we can all agree that Bob Dylan was a successful, intelligent, famous and wealthy person – someone everyone aspires to be…..and he was able to have the insight to understand that it all means nothing.

He was able to understand that anonymity is sometimes a greater blessing than fame and fortune.

How Good This Must Have Felt

I ran into this letter written by a slave to his former master in response to a request to return to work for him….

To My Old Master

Wow……

How many of us would dream of an opportunity to be able to write a letter like that to one of our previous bosses, let alone our previous “master”.

I just want to point out one interesting thing to note.  Obviously Mr. Jourdan Anderson (the name of the former slave), despite poverty and abuse, was a man of integrity and intelligence.

In fact, it seems that he may have been even more intelligent than his very wealthy and successful “master”.

These are my favorite stories.  The stories about the quiet, unnoticed, unimportant, ignored and assumed worthless people that are brave enough, smart enough, confident enough and angry enough to stand up for themselves against their abusers with dignity…….AND still are able to get ’em where it counts – right in the gut.
