Greed…The Deadliest Sin of Them All

28 Dec

Greed is a special sin – in my opinion.  The other six (wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, sloth & pride) don’t seem to be as dangerous to humanity as a whole as the sin of greed has, in fact, turned out to be.  Even the sin of wrath, although potentially dangerous, it is clearly detectable in a person (it is very hard to hide intense anger) and therefore preventable.  Envy, lust, gluttony, sloth & pride, though they do have some negative consequences to humanity as a whole, these sins are more on the self-destructive side.  Greed is the only sin that  has proven itself to be the most dangerous and most silent killer of them all.

I was watching a movie last night called “Inside Job”.  It was a documentary made to expose the real culprates behind the 2008 banking catastrophy.   If you haven’t seen this movie already, I highly recommend watching it.  Long story short, the heads of the banks working along side many other institutions such as our government, foreign governments, ratings companies and private universities managed to knowlingly (although most of the people involved deny that they knew) create a system that would inevitably collapse at some point, leaving the ones that benefitted from the profits of this faulty system scott free from blame and only the unknowing victims paid its price.

The system that these people created allowed the banks, with the help of lawmakers, to loan out large amounts of money to us – the consumers – with very little risk to themselves, but the profits were astronomical.  Basically, Bernie Madoff was a joke compared to these people.  Yes, just a handful of people (compared to the population of the world) were able to collapse the economy of the United States of America, resulting in foreign economic catastrophy and, I believe, we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.  We, the United States of American, still have not dealt with our enormous deficit that eventually someone (or some country) is going to want to collect on.

Greed.   The economic collapse of 2008 was only because of one deadly sin.  Greed.

If the entire world economy collapses, it will be because of one sin – Greed.

If the entire world economy collapses because of this one sin – all the other sins will be set into motion – especially wrath – by the rest of the world’s population.

And we, the people, are just sitting ducks, busy with our own problems, not even aware that this happening to us RIGHT AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

I am not trying to be a fearmonger, but I have to state the obvious.  The question is this ….What is the solution?

My answer is this….

We have to wake up and realize that we all have a role in the sin of greed.  If we don’t want greed to affect us, then we cannot be greedy.  This is the basic rule of karma.  Understand that life, yours and everyone else’s,  is worth more than money and possessions.  Personal power also has no real place in a peaceful life.  The “need” to have more is the root of greed.   We all have to think hard and long as to what the reasons are that we feel we “need” lots of money and possessions… because, let’s face it, most of us don’t really “need” all of the things that we have.  We only want them.  Why do we want them?  For comfort?… For ease of living?….

I ask you this –
Are your possessions really bringing “comfort” into your life?  Are they really creating an “easier” life for you?  Or – are they causing you to want more of them and work harder to keep what you have and get the more that you want?

Do you feel the “need” to have abundant possessions because of the “presentation” of personal status money and possessions represent?

Are your possessions preventing you from the peaceful quiet of contemplation necessary to overcome the greed that is within us all?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, realization is the first step to conquering our greatest and most powerful enemy……….
GREED.
